Features & Applications:
The AMS Step Probe Soil Sampler provides a simple, fast and economical method of collecting samples for profile description, chemical analysis or moisture determination. It features a built-in step which allows additional pressure to be used to drive the instrument. This nickel plated probe has a corrosion-resistant, comfortably-gripped 10" cross handle, which is detachable with a 5/8" threaded connection and a 1" OD.
It is made of heavy wall type 4130 chrome molybdenum steel with hardened tips that cut a soil core 1/2" diameter by about 12" long. The sturdy design resists bending and twisting. The wide body slot allows for easy removal of the sample as the tip cuts a core slightly smaller than the inside diameter of the probe. The top of the slot is closed to prevent soils from being trapped in the upper section of the probe.

Comments about AMS Incorporated AMS Soil Sampler Step Probe w/Handle - Nickel Plated - 33in.:
This probe is easy to drive into the ground due to the built-in step. However, if you expect to sink it beyond 6" in hard soil you'll need the aid of a rubber mallet. Fortunately, the probe is of sturdy construction and the nickel plating seems to be rust resistant.
I also like that the entry point has been necked down so the soil sample is smaller than the tube. This make is easier to collect the sample from the tube.
