Why is it necessary to remove battery if not in use for a long time if unit is OFF?

The meter is used to qualify equipment on the Production floor to determine if hearing protection is required. The meter is extremely easy to use and is accurate. The cost is very affordable and I would buy any product that was as good as this one is.
