Comments about Extech Instruments Extech Moisture Meter - Pinless:
This meter will not work with very dense woods such as ebony, goncolo alves, ipe, pink ivory, african blackwood, etc. I contacted the manufacturer after trying to use it on such woods and they confirmed that it would not work on woods with a specific gravity above about about 0.7 or perhaps 0.8. If you work with exotic hardwoods, do not buy this meter.

Great device. Has only one flaw - the device starts up in mode 3. Since I work mostly with Mahogany, I would like the device to boot up in mode 4 which is correspondant to Mahogany.

As a Finish Carpenter I'm constantly checking the moisture content of my materials, this meter gives me the option of setting it to the right material type, oak, maple, poplar. the self calibrating feature assures consistant readings. The only draw back is you need to have an extra battery if you intend to use it all day.
