This camera meets the new proposed RESNET (Residential Energy Services Network's) standard for energy auditing. RESNET's standards are officially recognized by the U.S. mortgage industry for capitalizing a building's energy performance in the mortgage loan, certification of "White Tags" for private financial investors, and by the federal government for verification of building energy performance for such programs as federal tax incentives, the Environmental Protection Agency's ENERGY STAR program and the U.S. Department of Energy's Building America Program. Their mission is to ensure the success of the building energy performance certification industry, set the standards of quality, and increase the opportunity for ownership of high performance buildings.

What is RESNET?

  • An industry not-for-profit membership corporation
  • A national standards making body for building energy efficiency rating systems

Who recognizes RESNET Standards?

  • Mortgage industry for capitalizing energy efficiency in mortgages
  • Financial industry for certification of "white tags"
  • Federal government for verification of building energy performance for:
    • Federal tax credit qualification
    • EPA ENERGY STAR labeled homes
    • U.S. Department of Energy Building America program
  • States for minimum code compliance in 16 states

Invaluable for moisture problems and mold problems!

Moisture in building materials can destroy the structural integrity and nurture mold and insect infestation. Infrared cameras can instantly image entire rooms, inspect hard-to-reach places, reveal wet conditions behind surfaces at the source, and then monitor when the area is completely dry.

Comments about FLIR Systems FLIR i7 Infrared Camera:

When researching the camera I was unsure if the 120x120 resolution would be adequate. It was difficult to determine what resolution was being shown on the various online photos. So far, I am pleased with the resolution of the camera, although it does not appear high enough to locate termite infestation. My first use was to locate a water leak within a wall. I was unsure where the pipe ran or why there would be a leak in the area. I ran hot water in an upstairs sink and downstairs found a hot spot on the wall. Cutting the sheetrock with a box knife found a joint in a cast iron waste pipe and the cast iron pipe above the joint had a split. Water was splashing on the sheetrock at the joint. Without the camera, I would have started on the bottom of the wall and not immediately seen the split. The camera is very sensitive to temp changes, slightly warm circuit breakers and wires are easily visible. The FLIR website has an online photo editor which allows you to move the center spot temp measurement to other areas of the photo. You can also add additional spot readings or change the color palette. None of this functionality was noted in the information that I was reading prior to purchase, I assumed that the jpg output of the camera did not have any embedded IR information but this was not the case. Overall I am pleased with the camera but hope that as a part time owner of rental properties I will get enough use of the camera to justify the price.

Comments about FLIR Systems FLIR i7 Infrared Camera:

I bought this unit as a homeowner to locate sources of heat loss/poor insulation. I couldn't find anyone locally that did energy audits. I've lived in this house 10 years and thus far have cut my oil usage by a third. While I have only had this unit for a week I have already identified several areas that need more insulation. I'm still learning at this point but hope to get a five year payback on the cost of the equipment in energy savings. Time will tell.

Comments about FLIR Systems FLIR i7 Infrared Camera:

We have 8 crews running energy audits. We were going back and forth on getting the B50 or buying a few of the I7's. The I7 was the way to go. It does everything we need it to do. Since we don't write detailed reports, we really don't need to have the pic-in-pic and we are able to save money and buy 3 I7's for the price of a B50. The techs showing the customers the hot spots in the attic via the IR camera lets them see how much heat they are losing and with the federal tax credits and utility company rebates available, it makes it a much easier sale.

Sales increased because we implemented this camera and you won't be disappointed.

    This provided excellent documentation

Comments about FLIR Systems FLIR i7 Infrared Camera:

This product was purchased to take daily documentation on construction sites. It has delivered exactly the thermal images anticipated. The focus has been exceptional. No digital images were needed to identify the photographed sites. Manual motor starter, motor winding and bearing temperatures have been verified. Internal valve leaks have been documented easily. Overheating wiring in junction boxes can detail among dozens of wires.

    Pros

    • Fast start up
    • Large memory for images
    • Multiple cursor options
    • Nice Case
    • Temperature range lock

    Cons

    • Not easily visible in Sun
    • Tight fit in storage case

    Best Uses

    • Contactor coil inspection
    • Heater tape inspection
    • Hot fuse and circuits
    • Loose power connections

Comments about FLIR Systems FLIR i7 Infrared Camera:

We used to inspect rail heaters. The ability to lock the temperature range when inspecting both shadow and sunny areas was very helpful. We used the temperature autorange and area high temperature. The C and F readings was very helpful. It does a great job. The screen is a difficult to see in bright sunlight. The I7 did not have the "visual camera" feature but in our inspection, we sure could have benefited from that feature. We were able to work 8 hours with one battery charge. We took as many as 266 pictures from 7 AM to 3 PM. We did look at the reporting software, that has some good analytic features, but have not applied that as of this message. I would recommend this camera. It is great for the price.
