I bought a 1940's house that had not been well cared for. I needed to determine if the water stains in the attic were current or old and no longer a concern. I also needed to determine if the reason for some peeling paint on the kitchen ceiling was due to moisture. The meter allows you to set "ranges" for different materials based on what those materials moisture levels "should" be. If your reading exceeds the range, the meter screams. However, I found it more helpful to compare a reading on a suspect spot to another spot in the same room. So you might say this simple meter was a bit "over-engineered" despite its low price. (So who knows if it is accurate?)
