Comments about Smith & Wesson Safety Eyewear, Magnum 3G Welding 5.0 Shade:
The mid-day and afternoon sun in Phoenix is blinding, and these are the only shades that allow my sore eyes to relax completely. The manufacturer emphasizes that welding shades are not to be used as sunglasses. After all of the research I have done, I'm certain this disclaimer is made not because of any shortcoming of the lenses to provide protection from UV, visible light radiation or IR. The disclaimer and warning is most likely issued to limit the company's liability from lawsuits arising from impaired motorists or operators of heavy machinery. These are one the most comfortable sunglasses I have ever owned, and I have been through several pairs of Oakley's, Julbo's and Maui Jim's. Try the 3.0 shade for driving in very bright conditions and use the darker 5.0 for outdoor work in intense sunlight. These shades are very dark and very green, and if you choose to drive with them, you have to really pay attention to red traffic lights and brake lights which tend to lose their "pop".
