I recently planted 23 trees and needed something to help me know when to water. This isn't accurate as far as EXACT % of moisture, but it is great to tell me if I simply need to water or not. If the meter registers a 4 (after I calibrated it, of course) then I water. If it's above 4, I wait. Simple and I have not yet lost any of the 23 trees. The temperatures outside are upper 90s to 102, so I am watching closely.

I use the device to determine watering requirement of roses and other plants. It gives me an accurate picture of moisture levels from the surface of soil to over twenty inches deep over time,allowing me to gauge watering duration and amount.

if soil is dry it will bend if not careful.

This soil moisture meter worked the first time I used it, but has failed to properly measure moisture levels since then. Needless to say, I'm very disappointed in this product and will be returning it for a refund.

I've had one of these for 10 years.
It has been very accurate(the more times that you adjust it, the more accurate it will be).
It is very sturdy. The probe is able to penetrate heavy clay soil.
WARNING--Please check the battery often; at least yearly. I neglected to due this last year and the battery leaked acid onto the meter's internal parts. Even after a through cleaning, I was unable to resurrect the meter.
I will purchase another one this summer.

Sturdy, convenient but when setting per instructions everything I test for moisture comes out a 10 and I am sure in areas of cover and absence of rain it should read less than 10 for wetness. DAVEY tree suggested the purchase but I won't respond the the Bottom Line at tthis time. The book is fine if you are a farmer. My concern is for trees and shrubs, so the book has no value.

Get one of these and use it. You will discover that you know less about watering your trees than you think. Why guess how much water they need when you can know.
